It all starts when you aren't looking. You blink. You brush the hair out of your eyes, your turn around and refocus... you've grown. You look that same person in the mirror you've been peering at all season, but for the first time today, you see her for real.
When did that get there?
How long have I not seen that?
Do other people notice this?
Growing. It can be fast - come in spurts - or it can be slow and seem like it takes forever.
For me, it's hard to see it in myself because I see myself all the time. It's the times I run into a friend I haven't seen in weeks or talk on the phone with a relative and I hear myself saying this and that... and I realize... I AM different. I believe differently now than I did. I've grown.
Like pulling last year's pj's out of a box and trying them on for size, growth happens right before our eyes every day. It's the blessing of distance, time, a season, that allows our eyes to finally focus on it and see it for what it is.
I'm so grateful for seasons... spans of time in which life happens so that growth can be seen, marked and celebrated. If you're in a season that seems like all is frozen cold still, be reminded that all the beauty of the earth sits nestled beneath winter's quiet just waiting to show off in the spring.
Winter's here. Growth will happen. Just wait for it.
